Important Than Presents
by: Author Unknown, Source Unknown
A man going abroad to work leaves his fiancee crying. "Don't worry, I will write you everyday," he said. For years he did write her. But since he was happy with his job, he had no immediate plans of going home. One day, he received a wedding invitation. His girl friend was scheduled to be married. To whom? To the mailman bringing regularly the letters of her boy friend! Indeed, distance does make hearts flounder.
The poor boyfriend surely explained, "What went wrong? I sent her letters, chocolates, and flowers." When relationships go wrong, the list of things given and done for the person usually crops up. We say, "I have given you this and that...I have done these things for you." It seems that love is simply proven by the bestowal of gifts and favors.
But while presents are important, love demands what is basic: presence of the beloved. I have observed for instance, the orchids of my mother. When she's away for a long time, they are unhealthy and many of them wither. But when she is around, they bloom with beautiful flowers. My mother does nothing exceptional. She just spends much time talking and caressing them.
I guess persons all the more require a caring presence. Love is fundamentally a commitment to a person. We may be committed to our business, job, hobby, sports and clubs, but strictly speaking, they cannot love us back. Only a person can love us in return, and for that matter the highest commitment as human beings is spending time with those persons we love. And since people need affection and nourishment, material things can only help up to a certain degree in fostering love. But it can never replace the greatest gift of presence.
Martha was busy with her job. She believed she had to work harder because she loves her father who is sick of cancer. She has to provide for his expensive medicines. Her brothers and sisters meanwhile stayed with their father most of the time. They bathed him, sang for him, spoon-fed him or simply kept him company.
One day Martha was hurt. She overheard her father telling her mother, "All our children love me except Martha." "How can this be?" Martha thought. "Am I not the one killing myself in my work to have money to buy for his medicines? My brothers and sisters do not even provide their share in the expenses as much as I do."
One night, as Martha was as usual late in going home, she peeped for the first time in the room where her father was lying. She noticed that her father was still awake. She decided to come close at his bedside. Her father held her hands and said, "I miss you. I don't have much time. Stay with me." And she stayed with her father holding his hand the whole night.
The next morning Martha said to everybody, "I have taken a leave of absence. I would like to be with father. I will bathe him and sing for him from now on." Her father had a beautiful smile. He knew this time Martha loves him.
* As children, we need the assuring presence of our loved ones. Adult people need no less. *
My summary:
In an ariticle the writer and source of which is unknown, the author shows several stories to emphasis what is required in love : presence and love from the beloved. The writing starts with a story of a man who sent many 'material things' from faraway place and finally lost girl friend's love. The man laments that his girlfriend leaves him though he sent many presents, but the true love requires presence, not present of the loved one. Second story is about a woman whose father is sick. She does all efforts for her father except being with him. However, after she knows the different thought of his father-that she doesn't love him, she realizes that caring his father herself is more important. From these stories, we can see that matters and money can't substitute the presence of beloved itself. What the people in love want most is that being and exchanging love with their lovers.

Retrospect..
Last year was the most important time for me of course-as a korean high school student. 7 days left until 2009 Korean SAT. So I often recall my memories and thoughts of last year. The thing I've thought the most was a study itself and a feeling of uneasiness, but now I think it also had a positive meanings.
First, it makes students mentally strong. As every competetion is so, striving to enter into a college needs mental strength to endure stress and uneasiness. If they can't control their mind, it is not easy to pass an entrance examination.
Second, it makes people can have basic knowledges. Some people might think it is better to study subjects selectively. However, having basic knowledge in varios fields can be important than studying just one field deeply, and high school is the right time to do that.
Most importantly, we can get positive pride in ourselves if we pass an entrance exam successfully. The person who did will admit that himself/herself has a sufficient ability to do anything, and might lead a active life. So he/she can be able to establish a positive self-esteem.
Of course, there are many side effects, too. Actually there are some cases that students-even elementary students- who commit suicide because of a stress from the study. I feel really sorry to hear those stories. Though, in my case, the times I spent studying and preparing for entrance exam had a positive, strong effect on me.
I wish a good luck to a students who take collegen entrance exam this year. ^-^

Media Art Biennale

because not only the works themselves are wonderful but
admission fee was even free, too~!!
There were three topics : Light, Communication, Time.
Personally I liked the second part the most. It was relatively more
interesting and was not boring. There were many interactive arts, and I liked that point the
most-if I walk around with a red lighted ball in hand, beautiful butterflies that are made up of
light gathers around me. It really made me feel dreamy...

This red picture at the right side of this is the one I can remember until
now. It symbolizes the rotation of life. Bed itself is a place where people
give birth to a baby, and die. Through a fine line and ascending smoke, the
artist tried to expresse that the birth and death-the whole life itself- is
rotating.
At this Biennale, I realized that the boundary of art is far more vast than
what I've thought until now. The videos, images and other more every day stuffs can be an art.
If we hold a new point of view and think more, maybe we can get more from our lives, and lead
more mentally affluent life.

10 things I hate about you

http://kr.youtube.com/watch?v=G7VQd84nNfE
This song "Can't take my eyes off you" was sang by Heath Ledger who is now dead.
I knew who he is after he died, and was quite impressed by his act at "The Dark Knight". My friend who is really into movies told me that Heath got into a hotel room, stayed there writing a diary as if he were a Joker to concentrate on a role he received. After hearing that story I think he was a passionate, hard working person, though I don't know much about him.
Every girls around me recommended me to see a movie "10 things I hate about you", just because of a 5 minute when Heath sings "Can't take my eyes off you". So I searched that video on the internet-actually I haven't seen the whole movie- and this URL up there is that. Well, I'm not really into him but I admit that scene was romantic.

The Glory of Persia ☆

Because it was a weekday, not many people were there. So we could look around without haste. As advertised, there were many relics related to the 'gold'. They arranged artifacts in a chronological order; from Iranian prehistoric period to the Sassanian dynasty. They also posted brief historical knowledges related to Persia. Here are some informations about that-this is just a part.
Birth of the Persian Empire: The Achaemenid Dynasty
The Achaemenid Dynasty constructed an empire which stretched from the Indus Valley to the northern tip of Africa between 550 and 520 BCE. Cyrus the Great exercised lenient policies toward conquered people, as did Darius the Great. The empire had a dependable network of officials, and efficinet road system and an extensive canal.
Hellenism&Parthia
After the military campaign of Alexander to Great, the king of Macedonia, Persia came under the rule of Seleucid dynasty.

The Sassanian dynasty amassed wealth through trade activity along the Silk Road, and this exchange of material culture aided the spread of Persian art and culture. The Persian influence disseminated through Central Asia and China, and, along the aforementioned trade route, into Silla.
It was glad to read this at there. I learned international history when I was in the middle school. I thought it was interesting at that time, and this was the first time that heard about Achaemenid, Sassanian Dynasties.

Well, It was the first time for me and my friend to visit the exhibition about Persia, so it was good to see that. To me, Persia reminds me of something mysterious and flourishy. The title of this exhibition was 'The Glory of Persia'. Maybe most people have similar image about Persia-even the planner of this show thought in the same way as I. As a whole, it was a good exhibition that reassured me of the glorious image of Persia.

The Phrase I Like!!
Love, like you've never been hurt.
Dance, like nobody is watching you.
Sing, like nobody is listening you.
Work, like you don't need money.
Live, like today is the last day to live.
These are phrases I like. I like last line the most. I wrote that line on the papaer and used to read it when I become lazy. It helped me to do my best when I was in high school.
Well, second and third lines are hard to do for me ;P, but it reminds me of my high school days. By the way, I think there was another line like, 'Dream, like you will die tomorrow.' wasn't it??
